Our History

BEST Kickoff 2021

The Beginning

In 2021, a Tech student named Garrett Smith noticed a need for a commonplace where students who graduated from a high school robotics program, could have a place to go to when they started to attend Texas Tech University.

Inspired by similar groups at Texas A&M and UT, Garrett wanted an organization on Tech campus where FIRST, BEST, and VEX alumni could stick together, and still be involved in those programs through volunteering, mentorship, outreach, and more!

A Community Driven Relationship

Due to the Tech Robotics Association supporting outreach, mentorship, and volunteering efforts, the organization developed a departmental relationship with the Whitacre College of Engineering STEM Outreach Program.

With the department's support, it allowed the organization to evolve and play a massive role in supporting robotics outreach efforts!

Supporting The Robotics Community!

The Tech Robotics Association has the privilege of helping support the K-12 robotics programs in West Texas, including the programs provided by the WCOE STEM Outreach Program!

From judging, to robot inspection, to tech support, to putting fields together, we have provided key roles for our K-12 robotics competitions since the organization's founding.

Competitions Galore!

Since the organization's founding, Tech Robotics Association had the goal of starting a college robotics team, similar to the ones that our K-12 robotics alumni members competed in.

In the Fall of 2022, thanks to the support of the Whitacre College of Engineering and the STEM Outreach Program, we were able to start the RoboRaiders VEX U robotics team!
